Democrats establish Dolores River National Conservation Area in Colorado

This bill designates approximately 52,872 acres of federal land in Colorado as the Dolores River National Conservation Area and approximately 15,452 acres as the Dolores River Special Management Area, with management plans required to protect natural, recreational, scenic, and cultural values. Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) introduced the legislation, which prohibits road construction, motor vehicles, and commercial timber harvesting in the Ponderosa Gorge portion and allows Native American tribes to continue using the areas for traditional ceremonies and gathering materials. The bill also removes certain river segments from consideration for designation as part of the Wild and Scenic Rivers System.
